What I Do

Katie Monroe, Bike Share Outreach Manager at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, will write from her passion for bikes, bicyclists and bike culture.

My Background

Katie Monroe, Bike Share Outreach Manager at the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, has a passion for bikes, bicyclists and bike culture. She feels bicycles are good for Philadelphia because "we need physical activity incorporated into our daily lives, we need to work towards a greener city, we need to stop paying the PPA half our paychecks, and most importantly we need to be out there appreciating this beautiful city." Appropriately, her new column will be called "Sharing the Road: A Two-Wheeled Perspective on Philadelphia." She answered a few questions for us... Most people describe you as… Bicycle-obsessed! People would be surprised to know that … I also have a car. For now, I am living a car-light lifestyle, not a car-free one. What is your drink of choice? Red wine. Where is your happy place? In the bike lane on the South Street bridge, looking out at the Philly skyline at night. What is your biggest regret? Not appreciating the Shenandoah Valley enough when I was growing up there. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? It would be really useful to be a morning person. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Maintaining my closest friendships for decades. Which trait do you most value in another person? The ability to listen. If you could interview anyone, past or present, who would it be? Belva Lockwood. Favorite movie? The original Muppet Movie. What TV show is currently your DVR/On Demand obsession? I don't really watch TV. What is your guilty pleasure? Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles. The worst thing anyone said or did to you is… We have a street harassment problem in this city. You don't want me to repeat some of the stuff I've heard. I believe in… Active transportation as a key part of the solution to our health problems, environmental problems, and happiness problems. If you could travel back in time, where would you go? Not very far. I'd rather be a woman nowadays than most other times! What is your motto or inspiration? "Four wheels move the body -- two wheels move the soul."
