Three Dragons score in double digits, but Elon digs in at the end to beat Drexel

Marcus Sheffield II scored 24 points as Elon edged Drexel, 75-70, on Saturday.

Hunter McIntosh had 18 points and six rebounds for the Phoenix (10-18, 6-9 Colonial Athletic Conference), and Hunter Woods added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Camren Wynter had 23 points and six assists for the Dragons (13-14, 6-8). Mate Okros added 13 points and James Butler had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The largest lead of the game was eight points and there were 10 ties and nine lead changes. Drexel led 37-31 at the half but a three-point play and three-pointer by Wood to open the second half quickly tied the game.

The Phoenix lead of five points inside the last two minutes was the biggest from that point. Sheffield II hit a 3-pointer at the 7:07 mark put Elon on top 59-57 at the Phoenix never tailed again. Butler’s dunk with four minutes to go pulled Drexel into a tie at 61.

Kris Wooten of Elon and Okros matched 3-pointers inside of two minutes to keep it a two-point game and after the Okros 3 the Phoenix went 6 of 7 from the line to hold on.

Drexel defeated Elon 63-41 on Jan. 16. Elon faces James Madison on the road on Thursday. Drexel matches up against Hofstra at home on Thursday.
