Drexel junior guard Kevon Vanderhorst is entering the transfer portal.

“After talking with my friends and family, it’s just a decision that we’ve come to,” Vanderhorst told the Inquirer. “I’m super grateful for my time at Drexel, the coaches and the people that have helped me grow there, but I just think what’s best for me to grow as a player is going into the portal and finding a place that’ll push me.”

Vanderhorst was a key contributor on the Dragons. The 6-foot-2 combo guard averaged 9.3 points and 2.9 assists while starting all 33 games. On Dec. 16, he scored a season-high 30 points against Howard.

Another highlight of Vanderhorst’s season came in Drexel’s 61-60 victory over North Carolina A&T on Jan. 31. In that matchup, he converted a contested layup to win the game at the buzzer that was later featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.

“One thing that I think Drexel could always like hang their hat on is that they know how to get the right guys,” Vanderhort said. “They know how to build a roster. There’s no doubt, like this upcoming year, they’re going to be able to put together a team that nobody sees coming.”

Vanderhort’s departure marks the first confirmed player Drexel coach Zach Spiker has lost to the portal this offseason.

Last season, Drexel lost four starters to the transfer portal.
