Pookie Powell scores 18 points as La Salle tops Richmond for third straight win

Explorers come away with a victory at Richmond.

RICHMOND, Va. — Pookie Powell scored 18 points and La Salle withstood four late-game offensive attacks by Richmond that came up short, as the Explorers won their third straight game on Saturday night, 66-58, at the Robins Center.

The Spiders went cold down the stretch, scoring only 23 points in the second half and making only one basket and three free throws in the final 7 minutes, 27 seconds. In the final half-minute, Richmond saw Jacob Gilyard, Golden, Noah Yates and Nathan Cayo each miss a three-pointer.

Saul Phiri and Isiah Deas scored 13 points each for the Explorers, who improved to 6-14, 4-4 in the Atlantic 10. La Salle

La Salle outrebounded Richmond, 40-31, and scored 13 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.

Gilyard scored 20 points to lead all scorers, including 17 in the final 3:27 of the first half. Golden and Cayo added 12 points apiece.

The Explorers next play 7 p.m. Tuesday when the host St. Joseph’s at Tom Gola Arena.
