The Penn Relays on Friday was named as one of 11 winners of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Athletics Heritage Plaque. The plaque is awarded for outstanding contribution to “the worldwide history and development of the sport of track and field and of out-of-stadia athletics,” an IAAF release said.

The release also said the plaque is “a location-based recognition which highlights, celebrates and links together iconic and historic athletics careers, cities, competitions, culture, landmarks, performance and venues around the world.”

Winners of the award were announced by IAAF president Sebastian Coe on the eve of the IAAF World Relays being held this weekend in Yokohama, Japan.

Penn director of athletics M. Grace Calhoun said the Penn Relays were “truly honored [by] this prestigious recognition.”
