Villanova’s Justin Moore has been diagnosed with a severe left ankle sprain and the sophomore guard is doubtful for the Big East Tournament beginning Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

Wildcats head coach Jay Wright announced Moore’s status Monday on Twitter.

“We’re all praying for Justin’s quick recovery,” Wright said.

The 6-foot-4 Moore, who took over as the Cats’ starting point guard Saturday against Providence after Collin Gillespie was sidelined with a season-ending left knee injury, left the game with 5 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first half after getting tangled with the Friars’ David Duke.

With Moore likely unavailable for Thursday’s quarterfinal game, the Wildcats may go to sophomore Chris Arcidiacono at the point. Arcidiacono played almost all of the final 25-plus minutes of the game and contributed four rebounds, two assists, and strong defense while committing just one turnover.

The Wildcats (16-5, 11-4), the top seed in the Big East, will begin the tournament by playing the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between No. 8 Georgetown and No. 9 Marquette.
