Mayfair is the place to be on Saturday
There will be plenty of activities on and around Frankford Avenue for Saturday's third annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes 5k Run/Walk and fourth annual Mayfair May Fair.
The run/walk, to be held rain or shine, is sponsored by the Mayfair Business Association and Mayfair Civic Association. Registration runs from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. at the Abraham Lincoln High School parking lot, at Sackett Street and Ryan Avenue. The run starts at 8:30 a.m. Prizes will be given to the winners.
The cost is $25. Proceeds benefit Hero Thrill Show Inc., which gives college scholarships to the children of Philadelphia police officers and firefighters who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty; the Sgt. Patrick McDonald Scholarship Fund; and Mayfair Memorial Playground.

Joe DeFelice, president of Mayfair Civic Association, will discuss the run on Jerome Barrish's radio show on Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. on WIFI (1460 AM).
The May Fair will include sidewalk sales, giveaways and prizes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Frankford Avenue from Harbison Avenue to Rhawn Street. The Philadelphia Parking authority will permit free parking along the avenue starting at 10 a.m.
There will be live music at Frankford and Ryan avenues by T&N; A.J. Slick, with appearances by Mike LeCompt and Mike McCullough; Grafenberg; Boss Hydro; and Static Lounge.
Other activities include:
• 15th Police District Advisory Council, Frankford and Ryan, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Local agencies will distribute information as part of a community day celebration.
• Fountain of Life Christian Church, Frankford and Hartel, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: The church will host a flea market, and a Christian rock band will offer entertainment.
• Stan's Health Foods, 7161 Frankford, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Donations of blankets, towels, food, treats and toys will be accepted for rescue and shelter pets. Also, there will be a health fair, featuring blood pressure screenings and body-mass index testing.
• Triangle mini-park, 7300 Frankford, 11 a.m. to noon: The business association will present awards to community leaders.
• Mayfair Shop 'n' Bag, Frankford and Hellerman, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Appearance by "Sponge Boy," who will give out balloons and pose for pictures, and free hot dogs, iced tea, lemonade, bottled water, snacks, baked goods and water ice.
• Republic Bank, 7300 Frankford Ave., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Face painting, pretzels, water, giveaways and a drawing for a $250 gift card.
• Devon Theater, 6333 Frankford Ave., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Art fair. Artwork will be for sale. Also, literature will be distributed for camps and programs offered by the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
• Bellalisa Hair Salon, 3530 Cottman Ave., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Mayfair and Tacony gear will be for sale.
• Noah's Ark animal hospital, 7414 Frankford Ave., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pet adoptions.
• Philadelphia Soft Pretzel Factory, Frankford and Bleigh, noon to 3 p.m.: Cheesesteak pretzel-eating contest, pony rides, face painting, Moonbounce, water ice.
• Asian Fusion, Frankford and Aldine, noon to 3 p.m.: Sushi rolling demonstrations.
• Frusco's Steaks, Frankford and Wellington, noon to 4 p.m.: Live entertainment and an appearance by a 1959 Cadillac.
• Prudential Real Estate, Frankford and Aldine, 12:30 to 2 p.m.: Best-dressed pet contest.
• Grey Lodge Pub, 6235 Frankford, 1 to 4 p.m.: Free hot dogs to anyone sporting Phillies gear and watching the team play the Atlanta Braves. Giveaways, including Yuengling shirts. Drawing for two Phillies tickets. Also, from 8 to 11 p.m., patrons will be invited to perform percussion on homemade instruments, such as tubs. Prizes will be awarded.
