A school crossing guard at a bus stop was punched in the face and knocked out by an angry motorist on Monday in Darby Borough, the mayor said.

The Darby Borough Police Department said the attack occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Sixth and Walnut Streets outside Walnut Street Elementary School.

Mayor Joar Dahn said video surveillance showed a man getting out of a gold Nissan Altima as the crossing guard, a young woman, was helping students.

The unidentified man, who was shouting obscenities, pursued the frightened woman down the street next to a school bus, then grabbed her and punched her in the face, Dahn said. The woman then fell backward onto the ground.

“I believe she was unconscious, a little bit,” Dahn said.

The man, who remained unidentified Tuesday night, then got back in his car and took off.

The woman reported the assault to police and was treated at a local hospital, Dahn said.

“This was a very traumatic experience for her and even for the kids,” Dahn said.

The police department said in a Facebook post: “We are exhausting all available resources to identify the individual responsible, but we need your help to get this person identified. If you witnessed this incident, please reach out to kcollins@darbypd.org with any information. A detective will reach out.”
