A knife-wielding Delco man was charged with assault for stabbing a man in the head during the Eagles celebration.
Jeffrey Zimmerman slashed a man with a 5-inch knife, narrowly missing his eye, during a fight Sunday night in Prospect Park, authorities said.
The celebration of the Eagles’ Super Bowl win turned violent in Prospect Park on Sunday, when a man slashed another reveler in the head with a curved knife, narrowly missing his eye, police said.
Jeffrey Zimmerman, 37, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and related crimes in the attack, according to Police Chief David Madonna, who made the arrest himself while assisting his officers on patrol.
Zimmerman remained in custody Monday, in lieu of $15,000 bail, court records show. There was no indication he had hired an attorney.
“This is just one of those things where our resources are already stretched to the limit because of celebrations, because, rightly so, people want to celebrate the victory,” Madonna said in an interview Monday. “But to have this burden placed on law enforcement because you can’t control your temper, or alcohol, just makes things more taxing for us.”
Zimmerman, of Holmes, was driving through Prospect Park late Sunday when he passed a group of Eagles fans celebrating the team’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, according to the affidavit of probable cause for his arrest.
The group had gathered near Fifth Street and Madison Avenue, where crowds from nearby bars had spilled out onto the street. As Zimmerman passed the group, he hurled threats at them, threatened to fight them and ordered them to “get out of the street,” the affidavit said.
Members of the crowd ignored the threats and told Zimmerman to just keep driving. He did so, the affidavit said, but parked a short distance away and walked back toward the group with his hands in his pockets.
Zimmerman ignored their requests to show them his hands, grabbed one of the men in the crowd and began attacking him, the affidavit said. During the fight, Zimmerman was knocked to the ground and swung up at the man with a 5-inch curved karambit knife.
The victim, whom police did not name, was stabbed in his head, a wound that Madonna said required 15 stitches and narrowly missed the man’s eye.
Zimmerman ran from the scene and drove away, the affidavit said, passing Madonna as he responded to reports of the stabbing. Madonna said he pulled Zimmerman over and held him at gunpoint after he refused to take his hands out of his pockets. The chief also recovered the blood-covered knife from Zimmerman while taking him into custody, he said.
Zimmerman is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 24.
