A police officer was hospitalized in stable condition after he was shot in the upper leg Monday night in North Philadelphia and a man who had the gun that fired was in custody, police said.
The shooting happened on the 2400 block of North 17th Street near Cumberland Street around 7:40 p.m., police said.
Two Highway Patrol officers were investigating two people inside a red four-door Saab when a gun that the passenger allegedly was carrying fired, police said.
The officer was transported to Temple University Hospital, police said.
“Grateful our officer is okay after tonight’s incident in North Philadelphia,” Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel posted on social media at 9:06 p.m.
“This is a dangerous job, and moments like this remind us what our men and women face every day. Thank you to everyone who responded quickly and professionally,” Bethel said.
The passenger with the gun was taken into custody and a semiautomatic handgun was recovered, Bethel said at a news briefing at the hospital.
A police source said the driver was also taken into custody for questioning.
Bethel said the injured officer was a 20-year veteran who was married with children.
“He’s doing good,” Bethel said at the hospital.
Fox29 reported that the Highway Patrol officers were conducting a traffic stop and the 53-year-old officer was performing a frisk when the gun went off.
No other injuries were reported.
This is a developing story.
