RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Mary Washington fired its president yesterday after he was charged with drunken driving twice in two days.
The board of the 5,000-student public liberal-arts school in Williamsburg said it was in the university's best interest that William J. Frawley, 53, be terminated, effective immediately.
Frawley, 53, was placed on paid leave April 12, a day after he was charged in Fredericksburg. He also was charged in Fairfax County with drunken driving.
Frawley was named president in July. He came to Mary Washington from George Washington University, where he was dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He also worked for 23 years at the University of Delaware.
Frawley had an annual salary of $305,000, lived in a university-owned home and drove a vehicle provided by the school's foundation, a spokeswoman said. *
