HARTFORD, Conn. - The chairman of United Technologies ended his marriage - and a highly publicized divorce trial - yesterday by giving his countess ex-wife a settlement agreement worth about $50 million.

Settlement talks began Tuesday night after a particularly difficult day on the stand for George David, who was grilled about Marie Douglas-David's attempts to repair the torn marriage while he was carrying out a relationship with girlfriend Wendy Touton.

The settlement gives Douglas-David, a Swedish countess and former Wall Street analyst, a $42.5 million portfolio plus $6.5 million and some personal property. *
