Police said the man cooked up a plan to have two men he hired tell the woman using the mower that they had hit her pickup. When the woman went into the house to tell her husband, police said, the suspect hopped on the lawnmower and took off.

The suspect said he stopped when he saw the mower had the wrong serial number. He told police that he feared for his life after the woman's husband confronted him, prompting him to pull out his gun.
