The agency that operates the New Jersey Turnpike is looking at privatizing toll collection.

State Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said yesterday that a request for proposals from private companies is expected to go out after Jan. 1.

Privatization could affect the jobs of 475 full-time toll takers on the turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

Nearly 200 workers attended yesterday's meeting of the Turnpike Authority and urged board members to hold off on the plan.
