Does Carson Wentz make the Washington Commanders’ Super Bowl odds worse?
WynnBet dropped Washington from 60-1 to 75-1 after the trade. Other sportsbooks aren't much more confident in the Commanders' QB.
Tough week for Carson Wentz. Not only did the Colts give up on him, but one sportsbook thought so little of his being traded to Washington that they dropped the Commanders’ chances of winning the Super Bowl.
Alan Berg, senior trading manager for WynnBet, jokingly tweeted out that he was adjusting Washington’s odds and making them an even longer shot. Generally when teams upgrade their starting quarterback their odds logically will drop, such as Denver going from 16-1 to 12-1 shortly after adding Russell Wilson.
In the case of Wentz, Berg took Washington from 60-1 to 75-1.
“When you see that Wentz is their plan … that’s really not going to get it done for us in the NFC,” Berg said. “We’re more than happy to take some [action] if anybody wants it. So far, nothing crazy’s come through.”
DraftKings was at 45-1 as of Friday morning. BetMGM had Washington at 50-1. The Commanders went 7-10 last year with Taylor Heinicke (7-8), Ryan Fitzpatrick (0-1) and Garrett Gilbert (0-1) at quarterback. Wentz and the Colts went 9-8, including dismal losses to Las Vegas and Jacksonville in Weeks 17 and 18 that prevented Indy from making the playoffs.
Washington gave up two third-round picks (one of which can become a second depending on Wentz’s playing time) and will pay Wentz’s $28 million salary for 2022.

When Wentz was traded by the Eagles to Indianapolis last year, it was supposed to be a beautiful reunion of the quarterback with his former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, now Indy’s head coach. But not even Reich was able to get Wentz beyond mediocrity. Now, it’s Ron Rivera’s turn for Washington.
“I’ve always liked Rivera as a coach. I think he’s a guy the players respect,” Berg added. “But I completely question this decision. It could go down as one of the worst trades that we’ll see in this decade.”

And finally
It can be a tough time of the year for those who originate the odds that many of the mainstream sportsbooks simply copy and paste. Between college hoops tournaments, and full NBA and NHL nights, there are a lot of moving parts. The Westgate’s Rex Beyers, one of the good guys in the industry, pulled back the curtain early Friday morning.
“Perils of opening up the line first: Sometimes you make a mistake,” Beyers said on Twitter. “Just got tagged and it took until the second [bettor] I respected to realize that I flipped Middle Tennessee/UAB in a C-USA semi. Oops.”
Beyers had UAB at +3 late Thursday night. As of late Friday morning, UAB was -7 in some places. UAB won 102-98 in a triple overtime classic.
“Been a long day,” Beyers said, “and if that’s my worst mistake, I’ll call it a good day.”
