Moral victory?

The Eagles fell to 4-9-1 on the season after a 33-26 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Eagles’ playoff hopes still aren’t dashed, but a win would have allowed them to control their own destiny with a 3-0 finish. Now, they’ll need help from WFT and the Giants down the stretch. Still, this felt a bit like a moral victory for the team, which is still in line for a top-10 draft pick and got an impressive performance from Jalen Hurts, who finished with three passing touchdowns and one rushing score. The Eagles defense forced three turnovers for just the second time this season, recovering two fumbles and intercepting Kyler Murray once. Even though the defense had a patchwork secondary, it gave the team a chance to win. Hurts led a final drive, but couldn’t connect on a desperation heaves as the clock expired. The Birds will play the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium next Sunday before finishing the season against the Washington Football Team at the Linc.

Eagles offense falls short on final drive

You can tell Jalen Hurts started College Football Playoff games for multiple schools. He was relaxed under pressure, but the Eagles ran out of time. The game came down to two Hail Mary pass attempts and both fell incomplete. The Eagles’ playoff chances are hanging on a string. The loss dropped the Birds to last place. The Cowboys jumped Philly after a win against the 49ers. Hurts put together a pressure-packed performance. He threw at All-decade cornerback Patrick Peterson like few quarterbacks would, and he actually had success. The defense ran into a Cardinals offense filled with playmakers. There will be a lot of scoreboard watching in Philly next week.

Good defense, better offense

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat. Eagles cornerback Michael Jacquet had tight coverage. Kyler Murray threw the ball right over his ear and DeAndre Hopkins showed why he’s one of the NFL’s best receivers. Jalen Hurts will have to put his Superman cape on and lead another scoring drive. Time is starting to factor into the game.

Hurts ties it

Earlier, this looked like a game where you turn the TV off and find something else to do. Now the Eagles have tied the game behind the arm and legs of Jalen Hurts. He threw three touchdowns in the first half, but it was his legs on that drive. The Eagles went for it on 4th-and-6 at the Arizona 49. Hurts didn’t have an open receiver, so he scrambled 17 yards. He then found the end zone on a seven-yard rushing touchdown.

Marcus Epps gets revenge on Kyler Murray

This game has been full of surprises. Add Kyler Murray throwing a red zone interception to the list. The Cardinals have been one of the NFL’s best red zone teams, and now they have two turnovers inside the 20. Epps’ interception was just the fifth for the Eagles. It looks like he got his revenge on Murray for shaking him earlier when he scored the rushing touchdown.

Defenses taking control

Both offenses were trading scores in the second quarter. Neither team has added points so far in the third quarter. The Eagles had two chances to potentially tie, take the lead, or trim the deficit to three. Arizona has the ball on the Eagles 43-yard line after a 34-yard punt. It’ll take a big defensive stand to hold Arizona scoreless on this possession.

Ward toe-taps for 2nd touchdown

Jalen Hurts and Greg Ward Jr. seem to have a nice little connection going. Hurts dropped a dime in the back of the end zone, and Ward finished it off with a toe-tapping grab. Hurts and the offense are rolling after a slow start. The Eagles also get the ball first in the third quarter.

Cardinals add a touchdown to the lead

Larry Fitzgerald is 37, but he’s still showing why he has some of the best hands in NFL history. Nickell Robey-Coleman had blanket coverage on Fitzgerald, but Murray threw a back-shoulder pass where the future Hall of Famer made a nice catch. The Eagles can’t afford to keep trading scores with the Cardinals while trailing.

Hurts finds Greg Ward Jr.

Jalen Hurts has learned from his slow start. His ability to convert fourth downs has been apparent in his first two starts. On a fourth-and-three at the Arizona four-yard line, Hurts connected with Greg Ward Jr. After a tumultuous start, it’s only a five-point game.

Defense flips the field

Kyler Murray got away with a close call on a fumble earlier, but he wasn’t so lucky this time. Eagles defensive coordinator dialed up the blitz and Michael Jacquet recorded the sack. Murray was holding the ball with one and landed on Jacquet. Nickell Robey-Coleman recovered on the Arizona 21-yard line.

Watkins’ big play

If you’re not very familiar with Quez Watkins, we understand. The Eagles’ sixth-round pick last April has just two catches on the season now, but one is a 32-yard touchdown catch today. Watkins has leapfrogged John Hightower on the wide receiver depth chart because of his familiarity with Jalen Hurts because they both spent most of the season on the scout team. He wasn’t very productive last week, but gave the Eagles a jolt today.

Quez Watkins gets first career score

Quez Watkins picked a perfect time for his first NFL touchdown. The rookie wide receiver used his blazing sped to take a screen pass 32 yards for a touchdown on 3rd-and-20. A screen play in that situation usually makes the field goal easier, but this one got Philly back within nine.

Cardinals strike again after blocked punt

That was fast. The Eagles are down 16-0 after a blocked punt and a quick Cardinals scoring drive. The blocked punt set the Cardinals up on the six-yard line. Two plays later, Kyler Murray completed an easy pass to Chase Edmonds. This game is looking like it can get out of hand. The Eagles need points.

Dec. 20, 2020

Tackling troubles

The Eagles only quality hit on the Cardinals’ third drive earned them a penalty. After Derek Barnett earned a 15-yard penalty for hitting DeAndre Hopkins after the star receiver had gone out of bounds, consecutive plays with poor tackling led to the Cardinals’ going up 9-0. Jalen Mills failed to tackle Cardinals tight end Maxx Williams on his 42-yard run, and Murray evaded Marcus Epps for an eight-yard touchdown run.

Dec. 20, 2020

Kyler Murray gets 11th rushing touchdown of season

Kyler Murray leads NFL quarterbacks in rushing yards, and he just showed the Eagles why. Murray faked the handoff and made safety Marcus Epps miss on an eight yard touchdown run. Safeties and linebackers will need to tackle in space to slow down the Cardinals offense.

Dec. 20, 2020

Rookie mistake

When you start a rookie quarterback, you have to take the good with the bad. The Eagles’ first offensive drive was full of bad. Cardinals rookie linebacker Isaiah Simmons dropped an easy interception on a Jalen Hurts pass that was overthrown. The Cardinals got pressure on Hurts on third down, and he threw the ball away from inside the pocket in the end zone. There were no Eagles receivers in the area, so the play resulted in an intentional grounding and safety.

Dec. 20, 2020

Next man up

The Eagles’ secondary consists of Michael Jacquet and Nickell Robey-Coleman as the outside cornerbacks in base defenses and Kevon Seymour as the outside corner with Robey-Coleman in the slot for sub packages. Jalen Mills stayed at safety and is flanked by either Marcus Epps or K’Von Wallace, who are alternating. It will be a challenge to contain a talented Arizona receiving corps with such a makeshift bunch, and Murray had 48 passing yards before the Cardinals’ drive was killed by a DeAndre Hopkins fumble.

Dec. 20, 2020

Ball don’t lie

Kyler Murray rushed for a first down and it looked like the ball was fumbled and recovered by the Eagles. Doug Pederson chose not to challenge what looked to be a missed call. As Philly native Rasheed Wallace used to say, “the ball don’t lie.” The Eagles forced a fumble on the very next play. Michael Jacquet knocked the ball loose from DeAndre Hopkins.

NFC East playoff picture

The Washington Football Team lost to the Seattle Seahawks during Sunday’s early action. If the Eagles win today and the Giants lose vs. the Browns, Philly would be 1/2 game out of first place. Beating the Cardinals won’t be easy with so many injuries, but the Eagles are in position to get control of the NFC East.

Dec. 20, 2020

Eagles starting on defense

The Eagles won the toss and deferred to the second half. They’ll see one of the NFL’s most dynamic quarterbacks first. A quick start on defense would likely give Jalen Hurts confidence. It won’t be easy. The Eagles are down three secondary starters, and the Cardinals have three pretty good wide receivers, plus the NFL’s seventh best rusher, Kenyan Drake.

Welcome to the blog

Good afternoon, Eagles fans. Welcome to the 15th iteration of the Eagles game-day live blog: Arizona Cardinals edition. The Eagles come into the game at 4-8-1 with a slight chance of gaining ground in the NFC East with a win against the 7-6 Cardinals. Jalen Hurts will be under center for his second career start and is hoping to pick up where he left off. The rookie from Oklahoma and Alabama led the team to an improbable win against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday, throwing for 167 yards and a touchdown and gaining 106 yards on the ground.

Hurts will face off against Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray in a matchup between former Oklahoma stars. Hurts was Murray’s successor with the Sooners in 2019 after transferring from Alabama. Both players are dangerous when escaping the pocket, and they’re both in offensive systems that have stolen some plays from Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley’s scheme. Expect to see some similarities this afternoon.

The Eagles’ secondary is banged up for what feels like the fourth year in a row. The defensive backfield will be without Rodney McLeod, Darius Slay, and Avonte Maddox. McLeod is out for the year with a torn ACL, Maddox is out for at least the next three weeks with a knee injury, and Slay didn’t make the trip to Arizona because of a concussion. Expect to see a lot of Michael Jacquet, Marcus Epps, K’Von Wallace, and maybe some Kevon Seymour. It’s going to be a challenge for the defense to hold up with so many unproven players, so this game might have to be a shootout.
