NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans is one of the nation’s best food cities, and for Super Bowl LIX, that extends to the Caesars Superdome.

Fans inside the stadium on Super Bowl night will have lots of concessions options that include local fare, from po’boys to gumbo and beyond.

If you’re headed down to New Orleans for the big game and want to stray away from just getting chicken tenders and fries, we got a first taste of all of the specialty items that will be available at the game. I’m no Craig LaBan, but here are the best things we tried …

1. Fried Oyster BLT

Oysters and bacon, who would’ve thought? The slice of bacon on this thing was thick, and the bacon and oyster flavors worked surprisingly well together, pulled together by a great sauce. It had just the right amount of tomato to make it work. Middle Child BLT, you’re in danger.

2. Alligator sausage

If you didn’t know in advance that the sausage was made of alligator, you’d never guess. I’m not sure what I thought alligator would taste like, but it really just tasted like a fantastic pork sausage. It came on a thick roll of bread, from a New Orleans bakery that’s been operating since 1958, topped with another fantastic sauce.

3. Lobster and crawfish étouffée

The Superdome will have two gumbo-type options, the lobster and crawfish étouffée and the chicken sausage gumbo, both served with rice. Both are great, but the étouffée was just a bit better, with rich flavors and great seafood.

Those were easily the best three items in our view, but let’s round it out with the next tier …

4. Soft shell crab po’boy

I’ll be honest, they skimped out on the crab in the preview, so I think this one could rise up the rankings for paying customers getting a much bigger piece of crab, but this was a solid po’boy with a really flavorful sauce.

5. Lobster Karaage sandwich

This is like a fried chicken sandwich, except instead of fried chicken, it’s fried lobster tail. It’s a solid choice if you love lobster.
