‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and its many connections to... Bucks County
Anne Hathaway's Philly connections are well-known. But what does New Englander Meryl Streep and the London-born Anna Wintour have to do with the region?

The devil may wear Prada (and work in New York), but she reps Pennsylvania hard.
In a recent interview with 6abc’s Alicia Vitarelli, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, the stars of the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada 2 and 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, discussed their deep Philly roots.
Hathaway’s Philly ties are well-known.
Her maternal grandfather, Joe McCauley — nicknamed the city’s “Morning Mayor” — was one of WIP’s most celebrated radio personalities. Her mother, Kate McCauley, was born in Philadelphia, attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown, and earned a musical theater scholarship to La Salle University. That’s where she met her husband, Jerry Hathaway.
Despite growing up in New York and North Jersey, Anne Hathaway has her sports fandom right. Remember the viral clip of her rooting for the Eagles at Super Bowl LIX?
When Vitarelli told Hathaway that Philadelphia claims her, Hathaway didn’t hold back. “I feel claimed!” she said with excitement.
But more surprising is that Streep, a well-known New Englander (although she was born in Summit, N.J.), also has Keystone State roots. As she said to Vitarelli, her ancestors are “all Philly.” More specifically, Bucks County — which just happens to be where one Anna Wintour’s family tree also takes root.
Earlier this month, Ancestry.com confirmed that Streep and Wintour, the real-life inspiration for The Devil Wears Prada franchise’s icy fashion editor, Miranda Priestly played by Streep, are, in fact, sixth cousins. Their shared fifth great-grandparents, Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Kinsey, lived in Bucks County in the late 1700s.
What’s more is that Bucks County is famously only 20 miles away from Allentown, where The Devil Wears Prada author, Lauren Weisberger, was raised. Weisberger, of course, worked as Wintour’s assistant before penning her debut novel, which was adapted for the big screen in 2006.
The Devil Wears Prada films may have been filmed in New York, Milan, and Paris but all its stiletto-strutted runways lead back to the lanes of Bucks County.
