Three new films to catch this week, including the comedy/drama ‘Amsterdam’ with a blockbuster cast

‘Amsterdam’

Writer/director David O. Russell (American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) offers a loosely true historical, comedy-drama set in the 1930s. The story centers on three friends accused of murder who find themselves trapped in a political plot. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington headline a big cast. (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Oct. 7, in theaters.)

‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’

There’s a lot of strange stuff living in Manhattan — and then there’s Lyle the animated crocodile, who’s having a big city adventure and helping a boy gain self-confidence. Starring Constance Wu, Javier Bardem, and Scoot McNairy, with Shawn Mendes as the singing voice of Lyle. Songs by the Oscar-winning team of Justin Paul and Philly guy Benj Pasek. Based on the children’s book by Bernard Waber. (Rated PG. Premieres Friday, Oct. 7, in theaters.)

‘Luckiest Girl Alive’

Mila Kunis plays a soon-to-be married New Yorker living her best life, who sees it crumble after she discusses her teenage trauma. With Connie Britton, Justine Lupe, and Jennifer Beals. Based on the book by Jessica Knoll. Directed by Mike Barker (The Handmaid’s Tale). (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Oct. 7, on Netflix.)
