Three new films to catch this week: Bros, Smile, and The Good House
Catch a new rom-com from co-producer Judd Apatow; an early Halloween horror thriller; or Sigourney Weaver as a boozy realtor who must confront her demons
‘Bros’
A gay rom-com from coproducer Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids) and director Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Luke Macfarlane and Billy Eichner star as two very different men (dopey musclehead, smart nerd) who meet at a disco and try to make it work. With Kristin Chenoweth and a cast full of familiar faces. (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Sept. 30, in theaters.)
‘Smile’
Get an early start on Halloween with this horror film from writer/director Parker Finn, making his feature debut. Sosie Bacon (daughter of Philly Six Degrees guy Kevin Bacon) plays a doctor who feeds off the trauma of suicide. The plot is kind of sick even for a scary movie. The ad campaign should have been “Beware the Grin Reaper.” (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Sept. 30, in theaters.)
‘The Good House’
Based on Ann Leary’s novel of the same name, this comedy-drama stars Sigourney Weaver as a boozy realtor and descendant of witches, whose life starts to spiral out of control when she reconnects with her high school sweetheart, played by Kevin Kline. Directed by the filmmaking couple Maya Forbes (The Larry Sanders Show) and Wallace Wolodarsky (Seeing Other People). (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Sept. 30, in select theaters.)
