New films to catch this week
B.J. Novak of "The Office" wrote, directed and stars in "Vengeance." "Resurrection" and a documentary on Leonard Cohen also debut.
‘Vengeance’
B.J. Novak (The Office, The Mindy Project) wrote, directed, and stars in this fish-out-of-water, conspiracy theory mystery-comedy about a New York-based podcaster who goes to west Texas for the funeral of a sort-of girlfriend. Was her death caused by opioids or murder? With Ashton Kutcher. (Rated R. Premieres, Friday, July 29 in theaters.)
‘Resurrection’
Rebecca Hall stars as a successful, but tightly wound single mom who’s keeping it all together until the man who once abused her (Tim Roth) comes back into her life. Then she becomes a bit unhinged. A slow burn psychological thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. (Not yet rated. Premieres Friday, July 29, at the PFS Bourse.)
‘Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song’
Musical documentary about the gravel-voiced singer-songwriter, told through interpretations of his most famous song. With Jeff Buckley, Brandi Carlile, Eric Church, John Cale, Judy Collins, Glen Hansard, Bob Dylan, and more. Written and directed by the longtime team of Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine. (Rated PG-13. Premieres Friday, July 29, at the Ritz 5.)
Howard Gensler writes about movies for The Inquirer, and is a former entertainment editor and writer for the Philadelphia Daily News.
