PHILADELPHIA A 40-year-old man lying in the road at E and Ontario Streets in Kensington was struck and dragged several blocks early Monday by a taxicab that then sped from the scene, Philadelphia police said.

A witness told investigators he saw a man lying in the street unresponsive around 3:40 a.m. and tried to rouse him, police spokeswoman Officer Tanya Little said.

As the witness reached for his cellphone to summon help, he saw a blue Chrysler 300 taxi with silver window trim turn right from E Street onto Ontario. He tried to stop the cab, but it ran over the man, dragging him a short distance before leaving, Little said.

The victim was in critical condition at Temple University Hospital with head trauma, Little said. His name was withheld pending notification of family.

Police were searching for the taxi.
