FLORENCE TOWNSHIP A woman accused of trying to kill her three children by driving them into the Delaware River on April 15 has been taken to a psychiatric facility for a more comprehensive evaluation, authorities said Friday.
Joann Smith, 49, was charged with attempted murder and endangering the welfare of children. She was undergoing a mental evaluation this week before being transferred to Ann Klein Forensic Center in West Trenton.
Police said she purposely drove off a boat ramp after veering off West Front Street in Florence Township with her children, ages 13 to 15.
A Florence Township man who saw the car in the river rescued the family.
A court hearing for Smith has not been scheduled.
