Bucks County high school student dies after bout with meningitis. What to know about the illness
What is Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis?

A Neshaminy High School student has died after suddenly becoming ill with meningitis.
Ryan Duffy was admitted to the intensive care unit at a hospital late last week, where he was diagnosed with Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, Neshaminy High School Principal Stephen Garstka said in an email to parents.
This information was shared with members of the school community with permission from Duffy’s parents, according to district officials.
What is Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis?
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common type of bacteria that can cause ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia and meningitis.
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Is meningitis contagious?
School district officials said that the type of meningitis that killed Duffy is “not usually contagious in a school setting” and doesn’t “typically spread through casual contact, such as being in the same classroom or cafeteria.”
Even so, school administrators said they’ll work with the Bucks County Health Department staff to enhance cleaning efforts in the high school.
“Based on longstanding public health guidance, students and staff at the school are not required to take any preventive or special precautions or receive antibiotics for prophylaxis at this time,” the school’s statement said. “Families who have specific health concerns should contact their healthcare provider for guidance.”
How can I help a grieving student?
The school district also provided various resources for Neshaminy students who may be struggling with the loss of a classmate.
Signs of stress to look out for include difficulties sleeping, changes in appetite, inability to concentrate, irritability, isolation, acting out and more.
In addition to a counseling team at school, district administrators also provided details for local resources.
