Monday’s South Jersey roundup: Makayla Veneziale strikes out 14 as St. Joseph softball remains undefeated

Makayla Veneziale picked up her 11th win of the season, striking out 14 to keep St. Joseph undefeated with a 8-2 softball win over Absegami on Monday. Veneziale was 2-for-5 at the plate, while Carli Melchiorre had three hits including a double and two RBIs for the Wildcats who improve to 18-0. Emily Martin had a two-run home run to put Absegami on the board in the first inning.

Cherokee beat Camden Catholic, 5-4, despite a late-game surge from the Irish. The Chiefs led 4-1 before Camden Catholic scored three runs throughout the sixth and seventh innings. Karly Messina pitched a complete game for the Chiefs, striking out seven while going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Brooke Clark went 3-for-4 with a home run, two triples and five RBIs, leading Delsea to a 10-3 win over Cumberland. Alexis Harkins had a home run for the Crusaders, while Diana Parker picked up the win and had a double.

Sterling put up seven runs in the fifth inning to come out with a 10-9 win over Woodbury. The Thundering Herd responded with five runs in the sixth inning, but were cut short. Mallory Skelly pitched a complete game for Sterling and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Hannah McLoughlin and Megan Barbara had two hits apiece for the Silver Knights. Nora Campo had two hits and four RBIs for Woodbury including a home run.

Hailey Neville pitched a complete game, striking out three and going 2-for-4 with a double in Ocean City’s 5-0 win over Highland. Jackie Nesi was 2-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs for the Red Raiders.

Marina Costello pitched a complete-game shutout to give Kingsway a 10-0 win over Clearview. Delaney Patella had a two-run home run in the fifth inning to end the game.

Madison Rios’ three-hit day led Doane Academy past Point Pleasant Beach, 5-2.

Hammonton scored two runs in the top of the ninth to complete a 5-3 comeback win over GCIT. The Blue Devils tied the game at three with a run in the sixth.

Amanda Magpiong picked up the win for Triton, deating Deptford, 6-4. The Mustangs scored four runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

Gloucester beat Schalick, 11-0, in five innings.

Audubon shut out Haddonfield, 11-0.

Ben Maiers went 2-for-3 and had the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth for Kingsway to beat Clearview, 2-1. Matt Lipka pitched seven innings for the Dragons including being the scoring run on Maiers’ single.

Dylan Heine struck out seven including three in the seventh to close out a 2-0 Haddonfield win over Audubon. The victory served as a bounce-back from Saturday’s loss to Triton for No. 9 Haddonfield (9-1), which has locked up an automatic berth to the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic and tightened its grip on first place in the Colonial Liberty. Heine also contributed at the plate as his hard-hit grounder in the top of the fourth chased home both runs on an infield error. Chris Brown and Alex Kadar, both of whom singled to start the Bulldogs’ only serious rally of the game, raced home on the play.

Evan Buckley held Burlington Township to just one hit in Moorestown’s 2-1 win. Eric Schmoll picked up the save for the Quakers.

Jake Guglielmi and Billy Donnelly each tripled in Buena’s 5-0 win over Atlantic County Tech. The Chiefs scored all five of their runs through the first two innings.

Staus Pokrovsky drove in a game-high three runs while Paul Kummer and Alfred Miranda each had two RBIs in Schalick’s 14-0 rout of Gloucester.

Nate Liedtka had a home run and drove in four runs as Shawnee beat Cherokee, 9-1. Joe Dalsey doubled and had three RBIs for the Renegades.

Wildwood scored six runs in the sixth inning to come back and beat Atlantic City, 8-6.

Ramon Andujar didn’t allow a run, leading Pennsauken past Cinnaminson, 8-0. Robert Barrientos led the Indians with three RBIs.

Mike Guzzardo went yard and had a double, totaling four RBIs in Bishop Eustace’s 17-3 win over Seneca. Johnny Piacentino and Eric Sabato combined for six RBIs, as Sabato also had a home run.

Cherry Hill West scored six runs in the sixth inning on the way to a 10-2 win over Paul VI. Ryan Widmeier had a home run for the Lions as Danny Berckman and Tyler Kubrak had three RBIs apiece.

Eastern’s late-inning surge led it over Lenape, 7-3. The Vikings scored three runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead and added two more for insurance in the seventh. Cade Hunter had a triple and a double for Lenape.

Gloucester Catholic scored 10 runs in the first inning, beating Salem, 13-10, in five innings.

Florence broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth and then another in the sixth to win, 3-1, over Pemberton.

Moorestown cruised past Rancocas Valley, 20-3, as nine Quakers scored. Ben Cantwell and Sam Winkler had four runs each, while Nick Cataline and Patrick Coleman had three apiece.

Drew Ragone had a game-high five goals in Haddonfield’s 17-5 win over Washington Township. Aiden Blake, Finn Morgan and Max Norton had three goals each.

Casey Murray and Mary McLaughlin combined for 13 goals to lead Mainland past Millville, 22-9. Ten players scored for the Mustangs, while Kylie and Olivia Giordano both notched hat tricks for the Thunderbolts.

Lower Cape May overcame a 4-0 deficit in the first half to beat Our Lady of Mercy, 9-7. Adrianna Dodge led all scorers with five goals for Villagers. Julia Gibson had a hat trick for Lower Cape May.

Julia Cutler’s game-high seven goals gave Cherry Hill East a 15-10 win over Kingsway. The game was tied at seven going into halftime, as Juliane Calalo netted five for the Cougars. Meghan Bennett scored four goals and Haley Phalines had three for the Dragons.

Brynn Eilbacker and Devin Rybacki combined for seven goals to lead Camden Catholic to a 12-5 win over Lenape.

Williamstown held Triton to a lone goal in the second half in its 20-7 win. Eight Williamstown players registered goals, as Madison Foti and Madison Coyle combined for nine.
