Success on the football field typically doesn’t come without trust.

Bartram junior quarterback Jaquan Givens has been reminded of that this season.

Thursday night at Northeast High, a stingy defense and an explosive passing attack helped the Braves blast host Washington, 50-0.

To Givens, however, it all starts with trust.

“I played quarterback since I was a kid, but I didn’t believe in [myself] until now,” he said. “Interceptions, I didn’t like throwing them, so I didn’t like throwing the ball. But I had to build trust in myself.”

Finishing 6 for 11 for 299 yards and three touchdowns should help. He also added 44 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Givens threw touchdowns passes of 70, 64, and 57 yards. He played receiver last season for the Braves.

The Bartram coaching staff helped him develop, he said.

“They told me I was really talented and I had a good arm,” said Givens, whose father, Henry Lundy (2001 graduate), played linebacker for the Braves, "They kept building me up, breaking me down, helping me learn from mistakes.”

The scheduled 6:30 p.m. kickoff was delayed 29 minutes because, both coaches said, their respective charter buses were late arriving at their schools.

Givens still got to work quickly, launching a 57-yard score to Elijah Cunningham on the game’s first play from scrimmage.

Zajhay Louginatus led the Braves (2-1) with three catches for 153 yards and a score, including a difficult over-the-shoulder catch early.

“That’s one of my favorite targets right there,” Givens said. “He never gives up on the play. He’s gonna go get the ball. So, I trust him.”

Isiah Jackson also added a 70-yard touchdown catch.

Washington’s defense forced turnovers early, but its offense was stifled throughout.

The Eagles roster had just 19 available players when the game began. At least two players were injured during the game.

Coach Steve Benzio said he expects more players to join the program because school is in session.

Washington (0-2) had to cancel last week’s game, he said, because of low numbers.

Students, he explained, are given transportation passes by the school district when the school year begins. No such passes are provided during the summer, which made it difficult for players to attend summer workouts, he said.

Junior linebacker Travis Crosby had an interception for the Eagles.
