There will be no shortage of drama this week as the Giant Center in Hershey hosts the PIAA basketball championships.

Through six classifications, five boys’ teams and four girls’ teams from the area will compete in the state finals from Thursday to Sunday.

Here’s what to know about each matchup:

Boys’ schedule

Class 1A: Sankofa Freedom vs. Neighborhood Academy on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Sankofa is back in the state final, looking for revenge after falling to Pittsburgh’s Neighborhood Academy, 56-51, last season.

The team, coached by City Council member Isaiah Thomas, won its first state crown in 2019 and is searching for its second. Sankofa is 22-8 and hasn’t lost a game since Feb. 12 against West Philadelphia.

Class 3A: West Catholic vs. Trinity on Saturday at 2 p.m.

After claiming its second state title in program history last season, West Catholic, one of the smallest schools in the Catholic League, is back in the championship game.

West finished ninth in the PCL, but first-year coach James Lewis has the Burrs (16-12) trending in the right direction.

They trounced Notre Dame High School in Easton, 76-52, on Tuesday in the semifinals. Trinity is from Camp Hill near Harrisburg.

Class 4A: Devon Prep vs. Obama Academy on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Devon Prep also enters as a defending champion. The Tide won their third PIAA state championship in four years against Berks Catholic last season.

This comes after opening the season on a five-game losing streak and finishing 11th in the PCL. However, Devon Prep (9-18) has dominated the Class 4A bracket, its latest win being a 73-49 semifinal victory over Lewisburg on Tuesday.

Class 5A: Bonner-Prendergast vs. West York on Friday at 8 p.m.

Bonner-Prendie has the chance to earn its first state title. The Friars won the District 12 championship in 2018, 2019, and 2020. They lost in the state semifinals in 2018, made their first state final appearance in 2019 (as part of Class 4A, losing to Imhotep), and the PIAA tournament was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Now, Bonner’s back, going 23-6 so far and finishing third in the Catholic League. The Friars made a PCL semifinal appearance at the Palestra, where they fell to Neumann Goretti, 64-60.

Class 6A: Imhotep Charter vs. Central Dauphin on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Imhotep knocked off PCL champion Father Judge on Tuesday to make its run at another state title. The powerhouse Panthers have won 10 state titles since 2009 and could make Pennsylvania history if they win on Saturday.

Imhotep has won state basketball championships across the 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A classifications, and now in 6A, it could become the first school to hold titles in each class.

Setting new milestones is nothing new for coach Andre Noble, who led Imhotep to its sixth straight Public League title this year. His group hasn’t lost a game since Feb. 1.

Girls’ schedule

Class 1A: Delco Christian vs. Williamsburg on Friday at noon

The Knights of Delco Christian (29-2) are making their first appearance in the state final after a 44-41 victory over Our Lady of Lourdes Regional on Tuesday.

Before this year, the furthest Delco Christian advanced in the PIAA playoffs was the semifinals in 2011. Now the team is on a hot streak, losing just two games this season, and one win away from hanging the program’s first state banner inside the school.

Class 4A: Neumann Goretti vs. Oakland Catholic on Saturday at noon

Neumann Goretti (19-10) notched its sixth state title in program history last season with a win over Lansdale Catholic, and coach Andrea Peterson aims to lead her team to another.

Finishing third in the Catholic League, the Saints fell to Carinal O’Hara in the PCL semifinals but have bounced back. They beat Audenried for the District 12 crown and topped Scranton Prep, 59-51, in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Class 5A: Archbishop Wood vs. South Fayette on Saturday at 6 p.m.

For the sixth straight year, Archbishop Wood is playing in the state final. Last season, the Vikings had their state title streak snapped with a 45-37 loss to South Fayette. They previously won four consecutive state championships.

Now, Wood (16-12) is seeking revenge, and it took a hard-fought, 45-41, battle over District 2 champ Crestwood in the semifinals to get back there.

Class 6A: Upper Dublin vs. Dallastown on Friday at 6 p.m.

Upper Dublin has been on a hot streak all season. The Cardinals, who enter the state final at 31-2, haven’t lost a game since Feb. 5.

A 48-39 semifinal victory over PCL champ Archbishop Carroll on Tuesday earned the Cardinals their first appearance in the final since 2018, when they beat Central Bucks South for their first state title.
