Cleanup inspired by Earth Day

WEST DEPTFORD Four cleanup initiatives are scheduled to be held in West Deptford on Saturday, in honor of Earth Day, which was Tuesday.

The township's Environmental Commission will sponsor the second annual Earth Day Event, which includes two beautifying projects near the RiverWinds complex. The focus will be on cleaning trash and debris from the riverbanks and along RiverWinds Drive.

The other projects include cleaning in and around the preserved land called Strawberry Vale, near Parkville and Jessup Roads, and planting wildflowers at a storm drain in a new development near that intersection. A Gloucester County College class is expected to assist at the former.

Dave Keller, vice chair of the Environmental Commission, said the annual Earth Day observation attracts attention, allowing groups like his to promote their cause.

"We use that [period] to work … to improve the properties around West Deptford," he said.

The events are to begin at 9 a.m. Organizers are seeking volunteers. For details, call the commission's chairman, Dave Sileo, 856-371-3919 or e-mail info@wdnjec.org.
