Driver runs down pedestrians in North Philly

A 44-year-old man was in custody after he allegedly drove a car into a group of people Tuesday afternoon in North Philadelphia, police said.

Around 3:45 p.m., the man drove a gray Buick Century into a group at 16th Street and Lehigh Avenue, injuring at least six pedestrians, police said. The alleged attack followed an unspecified altercation.

Two of the victims were initially reported to be in critical condition but were expected to survive, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

After plowing the car into the group, the man was pulled from the car by some people at the scene and beaten, Small said. The driver was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and was being held in custody there by police. He was facing possible aggravated assault charges.

One of the six people struck by the car was related to the driver and apparently was involved in the original altercation, Small said.

The injured were:

A 37-year-old man taken by private vehicle to Temple University with head and other injuries and listed in critical condition.

A 42-year-old man taken by medics to Temple with head injuries. He was in critical condition.

A 40-year-old woman who suffered injuries to her left shoulder and foot. She was in stable condition at Temple.

A 17-year-old girl transported by medics to Temple with left hip and left leg injuries. Her condition was not available.

A 28-year-old man with arm injuries. He was taken by medics to Temple and was reported in stable condition.

A 19-year-old woman taken to Temple with minor injuries.
