Delco is giving away free fans to help residents stay cool this summer
Residents can call the county’s 24-hour hotline to request fans, home visits, and other heat-related resources.
Delaware County is giving out more than 400 free fans, among other resources, ahead of the summer heat.
Officials held a press conference Wednesday to begin distributing fans and to announce their 2023 Heat Plan, which details the county’s approach to protecting elderly and other at-risk individuals from heat-related illness.
Meteorologists predict that this summer will likely not match up to the record-breaking heat of 2022. However, those above the age of 65, people with preexisting medical conditions, and infants and young children are still at higher risk from heat, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
The county’s heat plan focuses on providing resources for vulnerable residents and making it easier for people to get information during a heat emergency, said Monica Taylor, chair of the Delaware County Council.
“We’re trying to get the word out so that, if people need help, we can get that to them,” Taylor said.

Delaware County has set up a 24-hour heat hotline, available through Sept. 30, where residents can request a free fan.
Residents can also call the hotline for information about energy savings, tips for improving home heat efficiency, and at-home cooling tips.
The county will also issue public notices if heat rises above certain levels and work with the County Office of Services for the Aging to carry out the heat plan at their senior center, according to the plan.
Delaware County residents can call the heat information hotline at 610-872-1558, and more information regarding heat resources can be found on their website at delcopa.gov/health/pages/heatplan.html.
