A 58-year-old man is in critical condition after a minivan hit him Saturday night in Northeast Philadelphia, according to a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police said the driver of a 2014 silver Honda Odyssey was traveling southbound on Castor Avenue when the vehicle struck the man.

Investigators determined the pedestrian was crossing Cottman Avenue outside of a crosswalk, police said.

Fire department medics arrived at the scene and transported the victim to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The driver stopped and cooperated with the investigation, police said. Police did not identify the pedestrian or driver.

Between 2020 and 2024, the intersection of Cottman and Castor Avenues saw nine reported crashes that resulted in eight injuries, none of which were fatal, according to PennDot data.

PennDot has plans for a $27 million redevelopment of Castor between Cottman and Oxford Circle that would reduce the number of car lanes from four to two and install dedicated left-turn lanes, separated bike lanes, speed bumps, pedestrian street lights, and other traffic safety elements.

A community group sued last year to block the redevelopment, arguing local businesses would suffer due to reduced traffic and parking.
