The Pennsylvania Turnpike was expected to be shut down for several hours in both directions near the Fort Washington interchange in Montgomery County because a tanker truck overturned early Wednesday evening and leaked thousands of gallons of fuel, officials said.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The accident occurred sometime before 5:30 p.m. around mile marker 337 on the eastbound side. Because of the scale of the spill, both sides of the turnpike between the Fort Washington and Norristown exits were closed, said Carl DeFebo, a turnpike commission spokesperson.

Some motorists posted on social media that they had been stuck on the turnpike for several hours.

DeFebo said motorists should avoid that section of the turnpike for the remainder of the night.
