Several students at a middle school in Bucks County “became ill” from eating suspected marijuana edibles on Thursday, officials said.

The incident occurred at William Penn Middle School in Lower Makefield Township, which is part of the Pennsbury School District.

Officials sent a statement to families of all middle school and high school students in the district to notify them that “a small number of students allegedly ingested edibles laced with THC (the chemical component in marijuana) and became ill. The District immediately notified emergency medical personnel.”

Lower Makefield Township Police Chief Joseph D. Kelly III told Phillyburbs.com that three students from William Penn Middle School were taken to the hospital for evaluations. A fourth student was taken home by parents.

District officials in their statement said that they have seen an increase in the use of edibles, vapes, and vapes with THC “in our high schools and middle schools.”
