A former courier was sentenced to 18 to 36 months in prison for using his job to steal $245,802 from Main Line Health, authorities said Friday.

Raashid Jamaal Barfield, 34, of Upper Darby, pleaded guilty to theft by deception and was sentenced Thursday. He had been working as a courier for Priority Express, delivering blood samples, cash, and checks from August 2016 to January 2018. He was charged last May.

Shortly after Barfield was hired in the summer of 2016, authorities said, he began the thefts, taking $1,000 in cash from a Main Line Health complex in Newtown Square. Over the next 18 months, officials said, a significant amount of money continued to go missing from medical offices.

In an attempt to cover his tracks, investigators said, Barfield fabricated a travel log of his daily routes by taking out the stops where he stole money. He also turned off his phone’s GPS, in violation of Priority Express' policy.

On Jan. 19, 2018, detectives followed Barfield during his daily route. At the end of his day, they confronted him and found cash stashed in the center console of his car. When interviewed by detectives, Barfield said he began stealing to pay bills. But over time, his “greed grew,” said Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland.

Barfield was also sentenced to six years of probation. He was ordered to pay back the amount he stole.
