Woman who shot neighbor, self at Chesco veterans’ apartment complex has died
Anne Konopka, 49, died about 8 p.m. Tuesday, more than 13 hours after the shooting at the Whitehall Apartments in East Vincent Township, officials said.
The woman who shot and wounded a neighbor before shooting herself in the head in a Chester County apartment complex for veterans has died, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
Anne Konopka, 49, died about 8 p.m. Tuesday, more than 13 hours after the shooting at the Whitehall Apartments in East Vincent Township, officials said.
The wounded man, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized, authorities said. They did not provide additional information about the man or his condition.
According to East Vincent police and the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, the shooting occurred about 6:20 a.m. at the 48-unit apartment complex for veterans at 3795 Schuylkill Rd.
The man was leaving his apartment when Konopka, who lived across the hall, opened fire, hitting the victim “multiple times” in a leg and his back, the two agencies said in a joint statement.
While the wounded man fled to a grassy area in the rear of the building, where he collapsed, the woman retreated to her apartment, barricading herself inside and setting a fire in her bedroom before shooting herself in the head. The apartment’s sprinkler system extinguished the fire.
According to court records, Konopka was awaiting trial on harassment and defiant trespass for a pair of incidents in April and May.
The public defender assigned to her case did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
