A 21-year-old woman died from stab wounds after an altercation in the city’s Oxford Circle section Wednesday evening that left an older woman hospitalized, police said.

About 5:50 p.m., police responded to a reported stabbing inside a rowhouse in the 1200 block of Elbridge Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. Police found both women on the living-room floor. Officers took the younger woman, who had at least two stab wounds to her chest, to Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:09.

Police took a 38-year-old woman with a stab wound to her back to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

According to witnesses, the younger woman, who lived in North Philadelphia, was acquainted with an 18-year-old woman who lives at the house and had come to see her for a reason that police had yet to determine, Small said.

A 13-year-old boy who also lives at the house answered the door and the 21-year-old woman forced her way inside, witnesses told police. The woman was then confronted by the 38-year-old woman who is the mother of the 13-year-old and 18-year-old, Small said.

When the confrontation ended, both women had stab wounds but it was not immediately clear who was stabbed first, Small said.

Furthermore, police did not find the weapon or weapons used in the fight, Small said.
