According to the Coast Guard, the incident involving a U.S. Navy vessel was reported shortly before 8 a.m. Two sets of long, orange containment booms were deployed to control and limit the spill’s spread. The spread was contained in less than two hours, according to the Coast Guard.
It was not immediately clear what type of vessel capsized or the cause; the Navy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
It was also not immediately clear if anyone was injured, though the Coast Guard said it received no requests for search and rescue support.
The 1,200-acre Navy Yard is home to Navy engineering centers, the Navy’s Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility, and an assortment of retail and office spaces.
