Angelo Cataldi will air his final WIP sports radio broadcast this week

As expected, longtime 94.1 WIP-FM morning show host Angelo Cataldi will deliver his final broadcast this week after 31 years on Philly’s popular sports talk radio station.
Cataldi announced in October 2021 that he would retire after the Eagles 2022 season, ending a three-decade run at the FM station that dated back to 1989. On the heels of the Birds devastating loss in the Super Bowl, WIP told the Philadelphia Business Journal that Cataldi’s last day would be Friday. (His original plan, if the Eagles had won, was to deliver his final broadcast on the day of the victory parade.)
WIP brand manager Rod Lakin said the station will send off its longtime star with a career retrospective and visits from old friends, according to the Business Journal.
At 71, Cataldi, a former Inquirer reporter, has long been one of the most dominant radio voices in the city. A love-him-or-hate-him pundit, his morning screeds have a loyal following that includes daily commuters, athletes, and even begrudging head coaches. (Last month, Nick Sirianni clapped back at Cataldi over his vocal criticism of Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.)
WIP, which broadcasts both Eagles and Phillies games, has enjoyed an advertising boom between the Eagles’ explosive postseason and Cataldi’s final shows.
“I don’t think even someone as creative as Angelo could have scripted a better finish than the Eagles facing Andy Reid in the Super Bowl during his final chapter at WIP,” David Scopinich, vice president of sales for Audacy in Philadelphia, which owns WIP, told the Business Journal.
The station has spent months preparing its transition into the post-Cataldi era.
Cataldi’s longtime cohost Al Morganti, who has been on air since the 1990s, inked a five-year contract extension and will continue on at WIP without his longtime partner. WIP is bequeathing its popular morning show over to midday hosts Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie alongside other voices at the station.
