Two Philadelphia police officers exchanged fire with a man who shot at them on Saturday night in the city’s Summerdale section, then shot himself in the head, police said.

The officers, who were not identified, were responding to a domestic call around 6:30 p.m. when a passerby flagged them down near the intersection of East Sanger Street and Miriam Road and directed them to a man who had a gun and was wearing a camouflage jacket, according to a statement from a department spokesperson.

The officers approached the man, who was not identified, on the 5600 block of Miriam. The officers were pursuing him on foot when he drew the gun from his waistband, turned toward the police, and fired several shots, the statement said.

Both officers fired their weapons, police said, then the man fled to the nearby intersection of Bridge Street and Roosevelt Boulevard, where he shot himself in the head.

There were no injuries to police. Details about the man’s condition were not immediately released.
