An infant was in critical condition Tuesday after his mother went into labor in the aftermath of a car crash in West Philadelphia and gave birth to the baby prematurely, police said.

The crash occurred about 3 a.m., when a white Lexus rear-ended a pickup truck with the woman and a man inside at Overbrook and Haverford Avenues in the Overbrook Park section, police said. The man driving the car, which flipped on its roof from the impact of the collision, was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

Initial reports said medics delivered the infant after the 42-year-old woman, who reportedly was about 25 weeks pregnant, went into labor following the crash. Police later said the woman gave birth after arrival at Lankenau Medical Center and reported that the infant was in critical condition.

Yor’i El, the driver of the pickup truck and the baby’s father, told NBC10 the infant was a boy and that all members of the family were “all right."

El said they were on the way to hospital when the crash occurred because the mother was not feeling well.

The mother was in stable condition at the hospital, police said.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges were immediately filed.
