Police are investigating after a couple were shot and wounded while sleeping in their West Philadelphia bedroom early Thursday.

“They actually woke up to gunshots, seeing muzzle flash, and being shot. So being shot is what woke both of them up,” Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6ABC at the scene.

The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. on the 1400 block of North 56th Street, police said.

The victims — a 64-year-old woman who had numerous gunshot wounds and a 54-year-old man who had been shot in one side of his body — were taken to Lankenau Medical Center and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, respectively. Police said the woman was in stable condition; the man was treated and released.

Small said that there was no sign that the house had been ransacked and that it appeared that the shooter or shooters broke into the house through a basement window “with the sole purpose of shooting at least one or both of these victims.”
