A minor driving a stolen car was taken to the hospital after crashing a vehicle during a high-speed police chase Saturday in Gloucester County, according to police.

At around 2:47 a.m. Saturday, police reported to the Buckingham Village development in Mantua Township after receiving calls about four or five people checking car door handles, according to a Mantua Township police statement.

A patrolman saw multiple people trying to enter vehicles, according to Mantua police. Several of the people entered a Jeep Cherokee and drove away when they saw the patrolman, police said, and the patrolman attempted to stop the vehicle.

Several other people fled in additional stolen cars, including a black Hyundai sedan and a Kia, police said.

Officers split up to pursue the cars. One patrol followed the Jeep and black sedan onto Route 55 North, and another pursued the Kia.

The Kia’s driver accelerated onto Mercer Avenue, jumping the railroad tracks, and skidding about 150 feet before overturning on West Mercer Avenue, police said.

Pictures from the Mantua police department show three officers and a firefighter running toward the car, which was flipped on its roof, in a residential area.

The occupants had already fled the car on foot, police said.

Not long after, a minor was found on West Atlantic Avenue and Grey Fox Circle. The minor was transported to Cooper Hospital for evaluation, but their condition was not available Sunday.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
