Kevin McGonigle only needed one game to show he was ready to be an everyday player in the major leagues.

Making his debut for the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, McGonigle, an Aldan native and Bonner-Prendergast graduate, went 4-for-5, including doubles in his first two at-bats, and finished with two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

McGonigle, 21, became just the sixth player since 1900 to tally four hits in his MLB debut and the youngest player since 1990 to collect four or more hits on opening day.

The Tigers shortstop was selected 37th overall in the 2023 MLB draft after he hit .474 as a senior at Bonner-Prendergast and was named Gatorade’s Pennsylvania Player of the Year. He entered this season as the Tigers’ top prospect and the second-best prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline’s prospect rankings.

“I dreamed of this,” McGonigle told the Tigers’ website after the game about his performance. “It hit me, right after the flyover before the game. It’s hard to put into words, but I was just very happy [to] do what I needed to do to help this team win today, and I’m looking forward to doing that all season.”

When asked later why he swung at the first pitch he saw in the majors, McGonigle said, “I’m an aggressive hitter, I know I was going to get something firm, up [in the zone], so I was looking up against [Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta] and he gave me a cutter up and in and I was able to turn on it.”

McGonigle grew up a Phillies fan and won’t have a chance to play at Citizens Bank Park this season, but Detroit will host his hometown team for a three-game series beginning on July 10.
