Weathering the heat

Here's some practical advice to remain safe. Plus numbers to call if you need help.

  1. Drink plenty of water and other nonalcoholic and caffeine-free liquids.

  2. Avoid extended periods in the sun.

  3. Don't take salt tablets unless directed by a physician.

  4. The elderly and people with serious medical problems should spend some time in air-conditioned places, or at least open windows and use a fan. Don't use a fan with the windows closed.

  5. Check on neighbors and relatives.

  6. Make sure pets are cool and have water.

  7. Be mindful of the early signs of heat stress, including lack of energy, faintness and nausea. Rapid heartbeat, headache and chest pain are among the more serious symptoms.
