Football: Malone takes over at Gloucester

By Phil Anastasia

Ed Malone has been named the football coach at Gloucester.

Malone, 30, replaces long-time coach Leon Harris, who still is the school's athletic director.

Malone, a 2000 Gloucester graduate, played under Harris and served as an assistant coach with the program for the last 10 years.

"We have so much tradition," Malone said of Gloucester football. "We've had so much success under coach Harris. Things are working."

Malone said Harris has encouraged him to put his own stamp on the program.

"He said, 'If there something you don't like, change it,'" Malone said. "I played under him and spent the last 10 years as an assistant, so we have the same philosphy.

"But there's going to be some changes just because we're different people. I just don't know exactly what they're going to be right now."

Harris was Gloucester's coach for 26 years. His teams went 180-85-2 and qualified for the state tournament 20 times.

Gloucester was 7-3 last season. The Lions will return running back Ben Boyer, who gained 1,793 yards as a junior.

"The kids have been working hard (in the off season)," said Malone, a history teacher at the high school. "I can't wait to get to the summer and get started."
