Young not worried about playing first

Michael Young hasn't played first base in a while, either while practicing or in an actual game.

That will change today when he gets the start at first base when the Phillies close out their weekend series with the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

It's interesting that Ryan Howard is getting the day off, even though the Reds are starting a righthander, Homer Bailey.

Young's most recent appearance at first base came on Sept. 28 of last season when his Texas Rangers played the Los Angeles Angels.

Last year he appeared at first in 41 games, making 40 starts. He has played 77 games at first in his career, making 76 starts.

What's interesting is that Young hasn't practiced the position since he's come to the Phillies. Not in spring training. Not even during pre-game warm-ups.

"I have been at third every day," Young said before today's game.

He said he was focused at working at third since he is playing the position full time. Last year with Texas, Young only played third base 25 games.

Young said he was told this morning about the move by manager Charlie Manuel.

"I am not one of those guys who needs a huge heads-up," Young said.

He insists there was no apprehension about starting today at first.

"I don't get nervous playing baseball," he said.

He said his first baseman's mitt doesn't need any oil. He feels he and his glove will be ready.

"I love to play," he said. "I feel I am prepared, ready to go and I look forward to it, look forward to the challenges."
