Baseball: Two Gloucester Catholic pitchers commit to D-1 colleges
By Phil Anastasia
Gloucester Catholic pitchers Steve Mondile and Dante Scafidi committed to Division I college programs in the last week.
Mondile, a senior right-hander, has committed to Longwood University in Farmville, Va.
Scafidi, a junior left-hander, has committed to Rutgers in New Brunswick.
Mondile was 4-0 last season as Gloucester Catholic went 26-4 and won its fourth consecutive Non-Public state title.
Mondile had a 2.51 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 12 walks in 30 2/3 innings.
At Longwood, he will join a program that competes in the Big South Conference with teams such as Campbell, High Point, Coastal Carolina and UNC-Ashville.
Scafidi pitched just five scoreless innings last season because of an injury. He was 1-0 with 11 strikeouts, two walks and one hit.
Mondile and Scafidi are expected to be in the rotation with junior right-hander John Murphy, who has committed to Maryland; senior right-hander Mike Mercer; and sophomore right-hander Tyler Mondile, Steve's brother, for a Rams team to projects as one of the top squads in the state again in 2014.
