Football: Miller transfers to Public League rival

Shareef Miller, a hard-charging junior defensive end and rising Division I recruit, has transferred from Frankford to Public League rival George Washington.

Washington coach Rob Cohen confirmed that Miller, who has about 20 scholarship offers, registered at the school Friday and will begin classes at Washington on Monday.

According to Cohen, the reason for Miller's transfer was a change in address, with him and his family now living near Grant Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard in the Northeast. "He lives in the neighborhood," Cohen said. "He's about 10 minutes away from Washington."

Miller helped Frankford go 8-4 and claim the Public League Class AAAA championship last season. The Pioneers were nipped by eventual state champion St. Joseph's Prep, 10-7, in the District 12 final.

For his efforts, Miller was an Inquirer first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection on defense. "He's certainly a good football player," Cohen said. "He understands that next year is going to be a big year for him on and off the football field."

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Miller has scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Penn State, and Pittsburgh, among others. Alabama visited him last week.

"He's a big-time player, but one player does not make a football team," Cohen said. "It takes chemistry to put it all together."

Oregon is scheduled to visit Miller, who doubles as a tight end, next week.
