Basketball: CHE's Silpe sticking with Penn

Cherry Hill East star guard Jake Silpe said Saturday he would honor his commitment to attend the University of Pennsylvania even though Quakers head coach Jerome Allen would no longer be part of the program.

News broke Saturday that Allen, a former Penn star, would be released as the Quakers' coach following the team's final game Tuesday against Princeton.

After leading Cherry Hill East to a 66-56 victory over Atlantic City in the South Jersey Group 4 semifinals, Silpe said he still planned to attend Penn.

"I picked a school, not a coach," Silpe said.

The 6-foot-1 Silpe has led Cherry Hill East to a 24-6 record and a second consecutive berth in the sectional finals.

Silpe led East to its first South Jersey title last season.

Cherry Hill East will host Cherokee in the South Jersey Group 4 final Monday at 4.

Silpe scored 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists in the victory over Atlantic City.

"We knew he was good and he lived up to his billing," AC coach Gene Allen said after the game.
