Webb to join close friend Swift at Georgia
Before joining his teammates to warm up for Friday night's showdown against St. Joseph's Prep, Archbishop Wood wide receiver Mark Webb announced on Facebook his oral commitment to play at Georgia.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior, a four-star prospect according to Scout.com, chose the Bulldogs over fellow finalists Alabama, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State, and Temple.
"He's a complete receiver who catches everything," said Brian Dohn, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. "Every time he touches the ball, he brings it in."
Webb plans to join his close friend, St. Joe's Prep senior running back D'Andre Swift, in playing for the Bulldogs. Swift pledged to Georgia on Sept. 1. Webb and Swift both played youth football for the Mount Airy-based Enon Eagles.
Swift, also a four-prospect, is the No. 4 running back in the country and No. 33 overall prospect according to Scout.com.
Webb has been clocked at 4.75 seconds in the 40-yard dash. "Even though he does not have the best 40 time, he has the speed to get behind the defense," Dohn said. "I think he plays like a 4.6 kid."
In Wood's first two games this season, the first of which was played in Ohio and halted in the second quarter due to inclement weather, Webb made 10 catches for 145 yards and a score.
In nine appearances last year, Webb had 22 receptions for 559 yards and 10 touchdowns while helping spark the Vikings to the PIAA District 12 Class 3A final. He was a first-team all-Catholic League selection.
"He really competes hard," Dohn said. "And he's a smart kid. So he's a kid that can pick up any offensive scheme pretty quickly."
Even though he has orally committed to Georgia, Webb still plans to take the five official visits allowed by the NCAA. He intends to visit Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, Penn State, and Temple. National signing day is Feb. 1.
Webb, who had more than 20 scholarship offers, took part in the Opening Finals, a showcase event for the nation's top prospects, at Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., in July.
